SALFORD GREYHOUND STADIUM
This site is not an official website for the track shown here and is neither approved or endorsed by the stadium. I am indebted to Richard English for helping to construct this page. |
The Albion greyhound Stadium in the Greater Manchester town of Salford was situated at 2° 16' W 53° 29' N and first opened for racing on 7th April 1928. The track operated under rules, with racing administered by Albion Greyhounds (Salford) Ltd. The track had a circumference of 456 yards and in 1932 was racing on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday evenings, starting at 8 pm. It also offered 2 meetings on a Saturday, the earliest at 3.30 pm and the evening meeting at 8 pm. |
Sprint races were run over 300 yards, standard races over 518 yards and Hurdle races also over 518 yards. A feature of the meeting was that Handicap races were run over 518 yards, with up to 20 metres start being given to the slower dogs. The track was run successfully until it closed on 30th September 1976. |

I am grateful to Jon Seddon for the following link to a map showing the whereabouts of the old track http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html?txtXCoord=382054&txtYCoord=400120 |
Track Records, as of 1947, are shown below together with an indication of how fast the time is in comparison to other tracks, both for currently open and defunct tracks, in the UK. Ratings are between 0 and 100, where 100 is an extremely fast time and reflects the speed of the track, tightness of the circuit and quality of greyhound visiting the tracks. I am grateful to Tony Nash for providing the data. |
This section gives a comprehensive picture of
the badges produced by the track throughout the ages, but only provides the briefest of
glimpses of its history. For those wishing to undertake further research we can recommend
